Why Divers Need Emergency First Response
Why do divers need Emergency First Response? Because diving often takes place far from hospitals and ambulances. On a boat at sea, the first minutes of an emergency depend on the people around you, and that could be you.
The PADI Emergency First Response (EFR) course gives divers the CPR and first-aid skills to act quickly and calmly. Want to take EFR on your next trip? Send us your dates in the form below.
1. Dive Sites Are Often Far from Help
Many of the best dive sites are reached by boat, sometimes an hour or more from shore. If someone becomes unwell, professional help may take time to arrive. Trained divers can provide care until that help is available.
2. It Is Required for Rescue Diver and Divemaster
To start the PADI Rettungstaucher course, you need CPR and first-aid training completed within the last 24 months. The same applies to the PADI Divemaster course. EFR meets this requirement.
3. You Learn to Stay Calm Under Pressure
EFR is scenario-based. You practise realistic situations again and again, so if something happens you know what to do instead of freezing. This calm confidence is valuable underwater and on land.
4. It Makes You a Better Buddy
A good dive buddy watches out for their partner. With EFR training, you can recognise problems earlier and respond correctly, which makes the whole group safer.
5. The Skills Work Everywhere
EFR is not only for diving emergencies. The same CPR and first-aid skills help at home, at work, on the road and while travelling. Many parents also add the Care for Children module.
6. It Is Quick and Practical
At Chloe’s Diving Center, EFR takes about one day and costs €200. It takes place on land, so you can do it on a rest day without losing any dive time.
