EFR vs First Aid: What’s the Difference for Divers? (2026)

EFR vs First Aid: What’s the Difference?

EFR vs First Aid is a common question for divers planning the PADI Rescue Diver course. Both teach you how to help in an emergency, but they are organised differently, and only some courses meet PADI’s requirements.

This guide compares Emergency First Response with typical first-aid courses so you can choose the right one. Not sure if your existing training counts? Ask us in the form below.

What Is EFR?

Emergency First Response (EFR) is a CPR and first-aid program created by PADI’s sister organisation. It follows international resuscitation guidelines and is designed for everyone, not just divers. At Chloe’s Diving Center it costs €200 and takes about one day.

What Is a General First Aid Course?

“First aid” is a broad term. Courses are offered by many organisations, such as national Red Cross societies, workplaces and medical training providers. Content and length vary a lot: some cover only basic first aid, while others include CPR and AED use.

Which Do Divers Need?

To start the PADI Rescue Diver course, you need CPR and first-aid training completed within the last 24 months. EFR meets this requirement directly.

If you already hold a recent first-aid and CPR certificate from another recognised organisation, it may also be accepted. Bring your certificate and we will check it with you.

Why Many Divers Choose EFR

  • It fits perfectly with PADI training, so there is no doubt about acceptance.
  • It can be done in Hurghada on a non-diving day.
  • It is very practical, with role-play scenarios that build confidence.
  • It is useful well beyond diving, for family, travel and work.
