The Biggest Difference: Freedom

The most important difference is independence. A PADI Scuba Diver must always dive with a PADI professional, such as a Divemaster or Instructor.

A PADI Open Water Diver can plan and make dives with a buddy, without a professional, within their training and experience. That makes Open Water the better choice if you want to dive on future holidays without always booking a guide.

Depth Limits

Scuba Divers are limited to 12 metres, which is enough for many beautiful shallow reefs around Hurghada. Open Water Divers can go to 18 metres, opening more reefs and the shallower parts of some wrecks.

Time and Cost

If you have only 2 days, Scuba Diver is a great way to get certified. If you have 3 to 4 days, Open Water is better value: doing Scuba Diver (€300) and then the upgrade (€300) costs €600, while the full Open Water course costs €400.

Which One Should You Choose?
