How Long Does Emergency First Response Take? EFR Course Timing (2026)

PADI Emergency First Response Course

How Long Does Emergency First Response Take?

How long does Emergency First Response take? At Chloe’s Diving Center in Hurghada, the PADI EFR course usually takes about one day. It combines short theory sessions with lots of hands-on practice, and there is no diving involved.

Because it happens on land, EFR fits perfectly into a rest day or the day before your flight. Want to plan your EFR day? Send us your dates in the form below.

The Short Answer: About One Day

The EFR course has two main parts, Primary Care (CPR) and Secondary Care (First Aid). Most students complete both in a single day with breaks. The optional Care for Children module adds a little extra time.

Sample One-Day Schedule

Time of dayWhat you do
MorningWelcome, introduction and Primary Care theory
Late morningHands-on CPR, rescue breathing and AED practice
Lunch breakRest and recharge
AfternoonSecondary Care: assessment, bandaging and splinting
Late afternoonRealistic scenarios, final review and certification

Your instructor adapts the pace to the group so everyone feels confident.

What Affects How Long EFR Takes?

  • Group size: smaller groups often move a little faster.
  • Optional modules: adding Care for Children takes extra time.
  • Previous experience: people with recent first-aid training may progress faster.
  • Practice time: we never rush skills that could save a life.

How Long Is EFR Training Valid?

For PADI courses, your CPR and first-aid training must have been completed within the last 24 months. This applies when you start the PADI Rettungstaucher course and the Divemaster course.

If your training is older, you can take EFR again as a refresher.
