Nitrox vs Normal Air Scuba Diving: What’s the Real Difference?

Nitrox vs normal air scuba diving is a common question once divers start making more dives per day or exploring deeper sites. Both gases are used safely every day, but they have different strengths and limits.

This guide compares them side by side so you can choose the right gas for each dive. Want to try Nitrox on your next trip? Ask us in the form below.

When Normal Air Makes Sense

  • Shallow dives where no-decompression limits are not a concern
  • Divers who are not Nitrox certified
  • Very deep recreational dives where a Nitrox mix would exceed its maximum depth
  • When Nitrox fills are not available

When Nitrox Makes Sense

  • Dives between about 18 and 30 metres where you want more bottom time
  • Multi-dive days on a boat
  • Wreck dives such as El Mina, within the depth limit of your mix
  • Divers who want extra margin on no-decompression time

Is Nitrox Safer Than Air?

Nitrox is not automatically safer. It reduces nitrogen absorption, which can extend no-decompression time, but it adds the risk of oxygen toxicity if you exceed the maximum depth for your mix. That is why training, gas analysis and correct computer settings are essential.

How Much Does It Cost to Start Using Nitrox?

At Chloe’s Diving Center, the PADI Enriched Air Nitrox course costs €190 and often takes about one day. Ask us about Nitrox fills for your fun dives when you book. See all prices on our diving prices in Hurghada page.

Many divers take Nitrox together with the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course.

Book Your Nitrox Course

In the Nitrox vs normal air scuba diving debate, the best choice depends on the dive. Learning Nitrox gives you the flexibility to choose. Book your course or message us on WhatsApp.

Is Nitrox better than air?

For many dives between about 18 and 30 metres, Nitrox can give longer bottom times. For very shallow or very deep dives, air may be the better choice.

Can I dive deeper with Nitrox?

No. Nitrox has a shallower maximum depth than air.

Do I need special equipment for Nitrox?

Most modern recreational equipment can be used with common Nitrox mixes. You need a Nitrox-capable dive computer and a correctly marked, analysed tank.

How long is the Nitrox course?

Often about one day.
