Diving with Red Sea Marine Life in Hurghada: A Diver’s Guide

Red Sea marine life is the main reason divers fall in love with Hurghada. In one dive you can see bright corals, curious reef fish, hunting predators and, with some luck, turtles or dolphins.

The Red Sea is home to more than 1,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species, and some live nowhere else on Earth. Want to know which creatures you might meet on your dates? Ask us in the form below.

Why Is Red Sea Marine Life So Rich?

The Red Sea is warm, clear and nutrient-balanced, which allows coral reefs to grow close to the shore. Its semi-enclosed shape also means some species evolved here and are found only in this region.

Around Hurghada, protected islands such as Giftun and Abu Ramada help keep the reefs healthy and full of life.

Corals: The Foundation of the Reef

Corals are living animals that build the reef and give shelter to almost every other creature you will see. Around Hurghada you will find:

  • Hard corals such as table, brain and branching corals
  • Soft corals that sway in the current in pink, purple and orange
  • Sea fans and fire coral on walls and pinnacles

Please never touch coral, even fire coral can sting, and a single touch can damage years of growth.

Reef Fish You Will Almost Always See

Most dives in Hurghada are full of colour. Common reef fish include the Red Sea clownfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, anthias, surgeonfish and triggerfish.

The Red Sea anemonefish is a favourite with divers and photographers, often protecting its anemone close to the reef top.

Bigger Animals and Special Encounters

Some encounters depend on the site, season and a bit of luck. This table shows what divers often hope to see.

Is Red Sea Marine Life Dangerous?

Most marine life is harmless if you respect it. A few animals, like lionfish, stonefish, scorpionfish and fire coral, can sting if touched.

The simple rule is: look, don’t touch. Keep good buoyancy, watch where you place your hands and fins, and listen to your guide’s briefing.

How to Dive Responsibly in Hurghada

  1. Never touch, chase or feed marine life.
  2. Keep fins away from the reef.
  3. Use reef-safe sunscreen.
  4. Do not take shells, coral or souvenirs.
  5. Take photos without disturbing animals.

Good buoyancy is the best way to protect the reef. The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course helps you master it.
