Red Sea Diving for Beginners: How to Start Scuba Diving in Hurghada

Red Sea diving for beginners is one of the easiest ways to discover the underwater world. Warm water, calm sheltered reefs and clear visibility make Hurghada a natural classroom, even if you have never breathed underwater before.

At Chloe’s Diving Center, a PADI 5-Star Dive Resort in Hurghada since 2015, we have taken thousands of first-time divers on their first breath below the surface. Have a question before you book? Send us a quick message below and our team will reply within the day.

Why Is the Red Sea Perfect for Beginner Divers?

The Red Sea is perfect for beginners because conditions are gentle almost all year. Water temperature usually ranges from about 22°C in winter to 29°C in late summer, so you stay comfortable in a standard wetsuit.

Visibility often reaches 20 to 30 metres, which helps new divers stay relaxed and oriented. Many reefs near Hurghada start just a few metres below the surface, so you can see coral gardens, clownfish and parrotfish without going deep.

Currents at the beginner sites are usually mild, and boats moor in sheltered spots. That means short swims, easy entries and more time enjoying the reef. Want more reasons? Read our guide on why dive in the Red Sea.

What Are Your Options as a Beginner in Hurghada?

Beginners in Hurghada can choose between three main paths, depending on time and goals:

  • Introductory dive (try scuba): Two guided dives from the boat with an instructor, no certification needed. Perfect if you only have one day. Learn more about our introductory diving in Hurghada.
  • PADI Scuba Diver course: A shorter certification that lets you dive to 12 metres with a PADI professional.
  • PADI Open Water Diver course: The full beginner certification, recognised worldwide, allowing you to dive to 18 metres with a buddy. See the PADI Open Water Diver course in Hurghada.

Not ready to dive yet? Snorkeling in Hurghada is a great first step to get comfortable in the water.

What Happens on Your First Dive Day?

Your first dive day follows a calm, step-by-step plan so you never feel rushed:

  1. Hotel pickup and boat check-in, with time to meet your instructor.
  2. A short briefing on breathing, equalising your ears and simple hand signals.
  3. Equipment fitting and a practice session in shallow water.
  4. Your first guided dive on a shallow coral reef.
  5. Lunch on board, rest and a surface interval in the sun.
  6. A second dive, usually a little more relaxed and exploratory.

Our instructors keep groups small, so you get real attention. You can also see where you will spend the day on our boat.

Is Diving Safe for Beginners?

Yes, diving is safe for beginners when you follow a certified instructor and basic rules. Safety is the first of our four values, together with Service, Excellence and Joy.

Before diving, you complete a short medical questionnaire. If you have conditions such as asthma, heart problems or recent surgery, a doctor may need to approve you first. Avoid flying for at least 18 to 24 hours after diving, and tell your instructor if you feel any discomfort.

We also welcome divers with physical impairments. Read more about diving for the physically impaired.

Tips for Your First Red Sea Dive

  • Breathe slowly and never hold your breath underwater.
  • Equalise your ears early and often while descending.
  • Stay close to your instructor and use hand signals.
  • Do not touch coral or marine life; protect the reef.
  • Drink plenty of water and use reef-safe sunscreen.
